Abuja, March 8, 2018 (NAN) The All Progressivess Congress (APC), UK chapter says the right of women is sacrosanct, and should be protected by all.
Mr Ade Omole, a Chieftain of the APC in the U.K, said this in a statement issued by Mr Jacob Ogunseye, spokesman of the party on Thursday in Abuja.
Omole said that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government was working to ensure equal rights for all citizens.
According to him, women´s right should not be toyed with.
He, however, said that Buhari should be applauded for sustaining the role of women and involving them in governance.
As it stands today, the APC-led government in Nigeria is championing the cause of women and youth participation in governance.
The range of appointments that prominently feature women is commendable” Omole said.
He said that Nigerian women were the backbone of the society, especially, in the rural communities, as issues that matter to the average Nigerian woman cut across the spectrum of policy areas.
This, he said, included agriculture, health and education among others.
Omole noted that no society could progress where more than half of its population suffered systemic discrimination, and stressed the need for Nigerian women to participate in politics with a view to addressing some of the anomalies.
According to Omole, members in the UK had earlier converged at the British House of Parliament for an event organised by party loyalists to celebrate the International Women’s Day.
He said that the well attended event was held at the main chamber of the British House of Parliament in London.
Omole said that the presence of APC members at the U.K Parliament coincided with the 100th anniversary of the decision to extend universal adult suffrage to women in the country.
The party stalwart said that speakers at the parliament took turns to eulogise Nigerian women in their quest to take their place in the central affairs of the country.
The statement quoted Mr Jim Shannon, a member of the UK Parliament as saying “if women can maintain and succeed at core activities at home, what stops them from putting Nigeria on the pedestal of greatness if given the opportunity to operate at the centre.
Women in Africa should be encouraged to hold big positions in the affairs of their countries, ´´ Shannon said.
Shannon noted that women in Europe, the U.S. and UK were already taking the centre stage of activities in their countries.
According to him, Germany and UK are under the leadership of women, as both countries are doing great, a development he says can be replicated in Nigeria.
Nigeria and your party should champion the rise of women in African society, you have women who have distinguished themselves in their careers all over the world.
These talented Nigerian women should be positioned to take the mantle of leadership,´´Shannon said.
The statement also quoted Miss Ife Sarumi, APC Youth Leader in the U.K, as saying “Nigerian leaders must strive to ensure the success of the present generation to secure the future.’’
She also advised that the present generation must not allow the failures of the past to hold it down or become an excuse for its failure.
Sarumi assured that the APC-led Federal Government in Nigeria was working diligently to end all forms of gender discrimination in both the public and private sectors and ensure employment generation.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the International Women’s Day is a global event which celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.
The day which is celebrated every March 8, is a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
